Anantara's King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament Packs its Trunk and Moves to Bangkok

unnamed (14)That’s right everyone, the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament is packing its trunk and moving to Bangkok!

Our hugely successful charity event is now entering its thirteenth year and due to the popularity of the event we are moving it from its original home of Hua Hin to the Thai capital. Many of you already know that it’s a very unique event which attracts people and teams from all over the world including New Zealand All Black rugby players, professional polo players, Thai supermodels, Miss Tiffany’s transgender performers and European royalty. Although the teams are vying for the coveted King’s Cup trophy, the ultimate aim is to raise awareness and money to better the lives of wild and domesticated elephants throughout Thailand. unnamed (15)
To date the event has raised over US$750,000 which has gone to various organisations helping elephants and this year we are hoping to raise a lot more. The event also allows us to take 50 street elephants away from their often harsh environment and provide them with a jungle like setting, proper food, vitamins and full veterinary care which they otherwise don’t normally get.

Queenstown’s first ever 3-6-12 hour bike race set to attract good numbers

4. Rider climbs smooth single track at Rabbit Ridge_mediaHeld at Rabbit Ridge Bike Resort in Gibbston Valley, Queenstown’s first ever 3-6-12 hour race is set to attract over 200 riders from around the country building on the town’s reputation as a biking mecca.

As the first of its kind in Queenstown, the race on 22 February 2014 will accommodate beginner to advanced riders filling a gap in Queenstown’s mountain bike racing.
Rabbit Ridge manager Steve Norton said the event – which would be an annual occurrence - was based loosely around the popular 12 hour relay race event in Naseby but with more accessible and achievable courses.

“The three hour race is designed for beginner and junior riders wanting to challenge their ability or take on their first relay style race,” said Mr Norton.
“The three hour race is a team only event, while the six and 12 hour courses are suitable for beginner to experienced single track riders.
“With the open flat terrain we have at our disposal the three hour course will be great for spectators and riders alike who’ll still be a part of the 6 and 12 hour race atmosphere as the transition circuits are together.
“There’ll be food and beverage tents and Gibbston Valley Winery facilities on hand creating a festival atmosphere for racers and support crews.”
Officially opened in September 2013, Rabbit Ridge is the area’s only year-round dedicated and serviced bike resort with a network of trails for all levels. In the last three months newly-built bermed trails have been added and there are now over 40km of trails to enjoy.

“The trails are in amazing condition after a winter of bedding in and plenty of moist days over spring to assist with trail building and maintenance,” said Mr Norton.
Rabbit Ridge has already held a couple of races at the resort including the cycle leg of the Woman’s Spring Challenge, with 1,000 ladies competing. The first Rabbit Ridge XC Series which features a long course for XC enthusiasts and serious racers, as well as a short course for social and beginner riders is also underway.
“Longer term we envisage this 3-6-12 event could attract over 1,800 competitors and up to 3,600 support crew due to infrastructure in place and the land available,” said Mr Norton.

“It’s shaping up to be a “must-do” on the summer racing calendar.”
Gibbston Valley Winery CEO Greg Hunt said it had been a “fantastic six months of riding” and that it was vital to the area that Rabbit Ridge developed cycling events to add to the region’s credibility and grow the cycling tourism market.
“With the area’s existing cycle networks and bike infrastructure the foundations are in place to grow the race series and help position Queenstown as a premier cycling destination,” he said.
“With a wide offering of cycle trails there are significant economic benefits to the Queenstown region.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the positive responses we’ve had about Rabbit Ridge. It certainly adds another, much needed dimension to the area’s biking offering and we’ll continue to expand and develop over the coming year.”

Haunted mansion tours in February and New contest to uncover the scariest ghost story

The historic Macarthur region -home to one of Australia’s most famous ghosts, Fred Fisher – will host Gledswood House ghostsweekly ghost tours of the haunted Gledswood Homestead in February while ghostbusters have until January 30 to recount their scariest encounter with the spirit world to win ghost tour tickets and a double pass to see the new horror movie, ‘Paranormal Activity - The Marked Ones’.

Macarthur’s own ghost, Fred Fisher, was an ex-convict who mysteriously disappeared from his Campbelltown farm in 1826. Soon after. a local reported seeing a ghost pointing to Fisher’s body in a creek. A neighbour was later hanged for the murder. Fisher’s Ghost Festival is held in Campbelltown every November.

The ghost tour explores the stories of those who have inhabited the house throughout its history and, who psychics say, can still be heard in its dark hallways today.

Horses to Roam Sydney Streets at Twilight

Sydney's George Street will be overrun with hundreds of galloping horses on Sunday night, as the City of Sydney's Chinese New Year Twilight Parade weaves its way through the city.

Rocking horses, jockeys, chess knights and the parade’s special guest, a 20ft horse will trot through the streets as Sydney welcomes the Year of the Horse and brings to life the festival artwork Safety & Peace in Four Seasons.
565047The herd of colourful steeds will be joined by crowd favourites including giant Chinese dragons, as well as floats from local Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities, martial arts performers and much more, with over 2,700 performers and 32 floats for all to admire.
A highlight of the parade will be 350 world-class performers direct from Beijing, Shaanxi and Hunan in China. In Sydney exclusively for this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations, martial artists, acrobats, jugglers, puppeteers, dancers and musicians will wow crowds with their special skills and jaw-dropping performances.
The city’s buildings will also be lit up with stunning projections wishing revellers a Happy Lunar New Year throughout the evening.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the annual Chinese New Year Twilight Parade was always the highlight of the City’s Lunar New Year celebrations.
“We’re expecting over 100,000 people to line the city streets to watch Sydney come to life with the colours and sounds of the Chinese New Year Twilight Parade,” the Lord Mayor said.

Chinese New Year Festival Creative Director Gill Minervini said watching the city streets transform into a dynamic parade filled with the sights and sounds of Asia was always a spectacle to behold.
“The Twilight Parade is always a crowd favourite, but as we welcome the Year of the Horse, we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves to ensure it’s even more fun than usual,” Ms Minervini said.
“The horse is known for being smart, handsome and hardworking, but also for loving a party, so saddle up Sydney – this is going to be one wild Twilight Parade.”
The parade kicks off just after 8pm, starting at Sydney Town Hall and weaving its way through Chinatown before finishing with a fireworks display at Cockle Bay.
Crowds will also have the opportunity to get up close with some of the parade elements afterwards, with a special selection of floats on display at Darling Quarter afterwards.

Looking to convert a crisis into an opportunity, Thailand is urging travel trade buyers and guests to take their business to the provincial destinations, where the situation is perfectly normal.

Addressing a packed media conference at the ASEAN Tourism Forum here on 22 January, 2014, Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik said that while it cannot be denied that some major parts of Bangkok are facing transport and traffic disruptions due to the ongoing political protests, visitors can still have a perfectly good time in the provinces.

This includes the key tourism cities of Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui, Hat Yai, Hua Hin/Cha-am and Pattaya as well as secondary cities; such as, Kanchanaburi, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nong Khai, Rayong and many more.
“This is a good time for buyers to discover new destinations, especially those in the provinces bordering the Greater Mekong Subregion countries of Cambodia, Lao PDR. and Myanmar,” Mr. Thawatchai said.

He noted that promoting provincial travel is in line with the policy of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand’s main planning agency, to distribute income and jobs in the rural areas.

The Governor said that a new way of planning might now be necessary to create separate identities for the four geographical regions of Thailand, and market them individually.
On the trade show floor, most of the roughly 80 exhibitors from Thailand were also from provincial destinations. By and large, they reported that their appointments were met, and that buyers were interested in continuing to do business after getting a better understanding of the situation.

None of the Thai events at the ATF were cancelled, including a Pattaya late-night event, which was very well attended. The Governor said that it was important to proceed with everything as usual.
He said the ATF was important for Thailand as it was the first international travel trade event of 2014. It was also important for him personally, as the first international show that he attended since assuming the governorship in late December 2013.
Mr. Thawatchai said the primary problem are the travel advisories and the impact it is having on insurance coverage for travellers.
“The most important thing for us is that the goodwill towards Thailand remains unaffected,”
Mr. Thawatchai said. “Travel trade buyers see the evolving political situation as a temporary phenomena. There is tremendous sympathy and support for the ordinary Thai people, especially the many rank-and-file people who work in it.
“I was very encouraged by the feedback from everyone that once everything returns to normal, Thailand will back in full strength.”

Hat Yai to celebrate its Grand Chinese New Year festival 2014

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Hat Yai Office, in collaboration with the Hat Yai Municipality and the Si Nakhon Foundation School is organising the annual Hat Yai Chinese New Year Festival.

This year, the event will take place within the grounds of the Si Nakhon Foundation School from 31 January to 5 February, 2014.
The annual Chinese New Year festival is a much-loved and important tradition for the local people of Hat Yai because the area is home to one of the largest Thai-Chinese communities in Thailand. Every year, Thai-Chinese family members gather together in their homes to pay their respects to their ancestors and their ancient Chinese gods. This important time is marked by grand celebrations which are seen in the New Year.

More than 40 Thai exhibitors will be present at the Amazing Thailand pavilion at SATTE 2014 during 29-31 January, 2014, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. This year, the Royal Thai Government has announced 13-15 April, 2014, as the Songkran holiday so the Thai people will have a long holiday from 12-16 April, 2014, (including weekend).
