Newcastle's Top 3 picnic spots

With Spring well and truly here, it’s time to dust off the picnic blanket and explore Newcastle’s “Top 3” picnic spots

a
1.       King Edward Park
Often described as the most picturesque park in Newcastle, King Edward Park, in Ordinance Street, enjoys a premier position high on a hill overlooking the beach and the city skyline and is one of the city’s best loved attractions.

The park’s magnificent rotunda is regularly used for weddings and other celebrations (the manicured gardens are just gorgeous for photos), while its children’s playground and barbecues make family events memorable – and easy to manage.

Take a leisurely stroll down to the famous Bogey Hole baths, or indulge your interest in history by checking out the remains of the Shepherds Hill Battery and Gunner’s Cottage which were in use during war times.

To pick up a picnic basket, visit nearby Essential Ingredient (219 Darby Street Cooks) or Soul Foods (227 Hunter Street Mall).

2.       Blackbutt Reserve
Occupying over 182 hectares of stunning bushland, visitors are able to explore the plethora of nature trails including restored rainforests and wildlife exhibits featuring koalas, wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, emus and native birds. The kids can play and explore two fantastic playgrounds and enjoy feeding the ducks at the pond.

All your picnic needs are taken care of with five main picnic areas featuring BBQs, shelters, amenities and plenty of grass.

3.       Harbour Foreshore Park
Overlooking Newcastle’s working harbour, the Harbour Foreshore park on Wharf Road is home to a brand new children’s all access playground, barbecues with a view, undercover seating (just in case) and plenty of open space to kick a ball or go for a jog.

Newcastle’s iconic fish and chips haunt, Scottie’s is the perfect place to pick up some lunch before taking a stroll out to the iconic Nobbys Lighthouse or Nobbys Beach, or combine your picnic with a spot of shopping in the CBD – just a short walk away.
